Winter: The Surprising Season for Spectacular Sunsets & And Why Coronado Anchorage is the Best Place to Watch Them

Breathtaking sunsets are one of the cornerstones to why I love sailing. So why is it that winter trumps spring and summer in this respect? Well, it’s all due to the atmospheric conditions that occur exclusively during winter. Cooler, drier air often produces crisp skies, which enhances colors like pink, orange, and purple considerably. Additionally, thin cirrus clouds are more common in the winter. These clouds can catch color and essentially stretch it across the sky, which doesn’t only allow for a more beautiful sunset, but a much longer duration as well.

So why am I talking about sunsets and how they work? As an ocean enthusiast, in my experience, sunsets are a time when the best memories are made. It’s almost like being in a dream state. It doesn’t feel real, like heaven on Earth. Not to be over dramatic but it really does make me feel sentimental just thinking about it. After a long day of fun with friends, and before the day transitions to night, you have this sacred time where the sun goes down, and everyone stops to watch. Even the tone of conversation will shift, often to a place of love and gratitude, not only for the beauty of the world, but the people we share it with.
